The Department of Health and The National Patient Safety Office
The Department of Health's mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Ireland by supporting them to live healthy lives, focussing on delivering high quality and safe health and social care and ensuring the best value from health service resources.
The National Patient Safety Office was launched in December 2016. Located in the Department of Health, the NPSO oversees a programme of patient safety measures and engages with the HSE, Health Information Quality Authority (HIQA) and health professional regulatory bodies on patient safety and quality issues. Current work areas cover patient safety, quality, and care experience as well as a legislative programme. Policy workstreams includes clinical effectiveness, open disclosure, patient safety advocacy, and the use of data and health information for patient safety. The office also covers policy on antimicrobial resistance.
The Health Service Executive
The Health Service Executive (HSE)is a large organisation of over 100,000 people, whose job is to run all of the public health services in Ireland. The HSE manages services through a structure designed to put patients and clients at the centre of the organisation.
The HSE Code of Governance (PDF) provides an overview of the principles, policies, procedures and guidelines by which the HSE directs and controls its functions and manages its business, it is intended to guide the Directorate, leadership Team and all those working within the HSE and the agencies funded by the HSE, in performing their duties to the highest standards of accountability, integrity and propriety.
