During the closing ceremony of ISQua’s 41st International Conference in São Paulo, ISQua President, Dr Ezequiel Garcia Elorrio, highlighted Brazil’s role as host of the UN COP30 Climate Summit, which will take place in Belém from 10–21 November 2025. In recognition of this important global event, the ISQua Board has prepared an official statement, submitted to André Corrêa do Lago, President of COP30, on 2 November 2025. The statement, which can be read below, was formally acknowledged by the COP30 Secretariat on 3 November 2025.
Call for Action to COP30, Conference of the Parties
Att: COP30 President André Aranha Corrêa do Lago.
The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) is a member-based, not-for-profit community and organisation, dedicated to promoting quality improvement in health care. We have been working to improve the quality and safety of health care worldwide for over four decades. Our extensive network of health care professionals spans over 70 countries and 6 continents. ISQua's members are continually working towards quality improvement in health care around the world.
Our 41st International Conference is held in São Paulo, Brazil, from 12th to 15th October 2025, in partnership with Organização Nacional de Acreditação. One of the conference tracks is dedicated to the effects of the environmental crisis on health systems and on population health.
As professionals and citizens, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing warming of the Earth, the loss of biodiversity, and the pollution of soil, water, and air. Planetary boundaries are being trespassed as we are approaching irreversible climatological tipping points. Here, in the beautiful country of Brazil, deforestation and mining threaten the wondrous Amazon regions at a horrific speed, as well as the indigenous communities that have lived there since time immemorial. Elsewhere, the disruption of the biosphere takes on different forms, but is essentially the same.
Our health depends on the health of the planet. This ancient wisdom is completely supported by the status of our scientific knowledge today. We cannot close our eyes, and while we are privileged to have access to this knowledge, it is our moral duty to act.
We know what needs to be done, and there are good examples. Brazil is running ahead of most countries in shifting energy production to renewables; it is electrifying the economy fast.
We call on you all to do what needs to be done: Unite the world with the message that while the planet is burning, we come together to extinguish the massive conflagration that we are witnessing. Phase out the fossil industry and invest in renewable energy as soon as possible.
After 30 (!) conferences, this must be done without any delay. In the name of humankind, and in the name of the living world at large.
Thank you for your attention.
On behalf of our members,
Sincerely yours,
Ezequiel Garcia Elorrio
President of the International Society for Quality in Health Care.
