A Review of our Virtual Conference

It was with the remarkable Italian renaissance city of Florence in mind, that the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) bestowed the title “Emotion, inspiration and creativity – pathways to global health quality” on our 37th international conference.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Sara Albolino, Director at the Centre for patient safety of the Tuscany Region, and Chair of the WHO Collaborating Centre Collaborating Centre in Communication and Human Factor for Delivery of Safety and Quality Care, along with her colleagues.

I am speaking to all of you from the front line here in Italy, mainly in Florence Tuscany. As you all may know, I am a surgeon and emergency physician and, since 2002, the Clinical Risk Manager for the Florence Healthcare Trust. When the COVID-19 outbreak occurred I felt the necessity to go back to front line and help my collegues, nurses and intensivits, and other specialties to treat the enormous amount of COVD-19 positive symptomatic patients in very severe conditions needing invasive ventilation and/or supported by NIV or CPAP procedures.

ISQua Statement on COVID-19

We are aware of the concerns raised by the Coronavirus outbreak (also known as COVID-19), and our thoughts are with all those, who have been directly affected, in Italy, China, South Korea, and all other affected countries.

The thought of going to Florence, Italy for a one-week practical exposure on Clinical Risk management and Patient Safety left me very anxious. It will be my first time travelling to Italy, and secondly, I was eager to have an Italian experience in the course of my fellowship training.
